GLASGOW
Everyone’s talking about Six
by Nico, the restaurant that
changes theme every six
weeks with a new, six-course tasting
menu. The recent Vietnamese
menu commenced with Vietnam’s
beloved Banh Mi sandwich
and concluded with a classic
Vietnamese coffee. The aim was to
take guests on a journey through
the alleys of Hanoi to the vibrant
street food markets of Saigon,
providing an authentic experience.

Clustered around The Newarke and
De Montfort University campus, just
minutes from Leicester city centre,
are remarkable buildings that tell the
story of Leicester from its medieval origins
to its manufacturing heyday. On the
last Sunday of the month, visitors can
explore some of these historic places
free of charge. Guided tours of Leicester
Castle Great Hall and the Magazine
are also available with a Blue Badge
Guide (booking essential). The area also
has lovely outdoor spaces to discover
including Castle Gardens.

Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of the
world’s greatest violinists. Krzysztof
Penderecki is a giant among living
composers. To celebrate Penderecki’s
85th birthday, they come together in
his colourful Second Violin Concerto
at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 1st
December – before Penderecki conducts
Tchaikovsky’s glorious Fifth Symphony. This
should be very special indeed.

Southernhay House Hotel is a luxurious
sanctuary in the heart of the city.
The first owner of this Grade-II listed
Georgian townhouse was Captain William
Kirkpatrick, an officer of the East India
Company. The 10 rooms are named after
trades synonymous with Exeter’s past as a
mercantile hub, so expect to stay in Silk,
Cotton, Ivory and Spice among others.

The Ilha Deserta is a remote sand
bar island south of Faro, which has
some of the most pristine and unspoilt
beaches found in the Algarve. There is
no tourist development on the island,
and along the six-mile shoreline of sand
dunes there is just a single building, an
exclusive restaurant, Estaminé, with fresh
fish and seafood a speciality. Portugal’s
most southerly point, the Cabo de Santa
Maria, is situated on the Ilha Deserta and
is marked by a monument of sea debris
and driftwood. On the lagoon side of the
island there are calm waters ideal
for snorkelling.
GENEVA
Just a short tram ride from the
centre of Geneva is Carouge, a
Mediterranean-style hamlet modelled
after Nice, which has become Geneva’s
hippest suburb. Known as ‘little Italy’, its
houses have painted shutters and red
roofs. Many of the neo-classical houses
and the inner courtyard gardens are well
preserved and have been converted to
boutiques, workshops and antique shops.
There are plenty of bistros, cafés and
restaurants, plus art galleries, studios and a
museum. After dark, the area comes alive
with jazz bars and nightclubs.
