COLOGNE
The four-star art’otel Cologne is in
the city’s smart, redeveloped river
port. As with other art’otels, it acts as
a gallery for an artist’s work, in this case
Korean painter SEO, whose vivid paintings
depict canyons, mountains and coral
reefs. Rooms are mainly white, which
gives them a feeling of light and space,
accentuated by the floor-to-ceiling
windows. An opaque screen separates
the bedroom from the bathroom. The
hotel’s restaurant serves delicious Asian
fusion food and you can sip in style in the
adjoining bar.
BUDAPEST
Menza – its name refers to the
canteens of the Socialist era – is a
stylish restaurant with a vintage feel
on a lively square. It’s very popular – its
location, menu, affordable prices and
attentive staff all play a role in this success
– so it’s worth booking ahead. Expect
simple but delicious Hungarian classics
with a modern twist, like Rhubarb Cream
Soup with Lemon Ice Cream, Traditional
Hungarian Lamb’s Liver Stew, Hungarian
Veal Stew and Oven-baked Duck Thigh
with Truffle Sauce. There’s a pretty patio
for eating al fresco on sunny days.

If you’re looking for a traditional Welsh Christmas to remember, why not grab a torch,
wrap up warm and follow the star to St Fagans Museum on 6th-8th December this year.
There’ll be unmissable performances of Wales’ unique Christmas traditions: the Mari Lwyd
and The Hunting of the Wren. You’ll find logs on the fire, carols in the chapel, traditional Welsh
Plygain singing in the church and a brass band on Gwalia Green. For the little ones there’ll
be a chance to meet Father Christmas. You can write your Christmas list at the Victorian
Schoolhouse then pop it in the box at the post office. Stop for a chat with the postmaster
while you’re there. Ride the Christmas land train down to the Llwyn Yr Eos Farm to meet
Mother Christmas in her kitchen, then get creative at the craft workshops, with wreath-
making for grown-ups as well as family-friendly gingerbread decorating and more, and make
a start on your Christmas shopping at the festive food and craft markets
Then as the evening draws to a close, everyone will gather together in the Atrium for some
carols to gladden your heart – there’s no better way to kick off the festive season than the

Le Clos Saint Martin B&B is set in a

CHAMBÉRY

tiny rue du Sénat de Savoie, cobbled
rue Juiverie, boutique-lined rue de la
Métropole and picturesque rue Basse-du-
Château with its footbridge-gallery and
arcades of old workshops. Visit the 15th-
century Saint-François-de-Sales cathedral,
take a guided tour of the impressive
Château des Ducs de Savoie and see the
Elephants fountain.
