Germany’s oldest zoo opened in
1844 and occupies an 80-acre area
in Tiergarten park and is home to
the world’s largest variety of species.
Almost 20,000 animals of around
1,400 species live in the zoo including
elephants, giraffes, gorillas and
Germany’s only giant pandas. There’s
a treetop canopy trail with hundreds
of free-flying birds, an Antarctic-style
Penguin World and animal-feeding
sessions with elephants, hippos, chimps
and sea-lions every day. There’s also
the opportunity to meet some of the
animals, including elephants and
penguins.

Spend a day discovering the Biguglia
Nature Reserve south of Bastia, the
largest area of water in Corsica
which stretches over 3,500 acres and
is separated from the sea by a narrow
stretch of land. This is a site that is unique
throughout the Mediterranean thanks to
its biodiversity, with countless migratory
birds using it as a stopover and especially
as a breeding ground, along with an
exceptional range of flora and fauna.
Around 130 species of aquatic bird
are found in the reserve, including the
common flamingo and great cormorants.
