Did you know you can surf in th
centre of the city? The waves on
the Eisbach river at the entrance to
the Englischer Garten (English Garden)
attract surfers and onlookers from around
the world. It’s the largest, best and most
consistent city-centre location for river
surfing, and people have been surfing
here for 40 years. The man-made Eisbach
emerges from underground just a few
steps away from the Haus der Kunst art
gallery on Prinzregentenstrasse. A stone
step at the outlet generates a standing
wave about half a metre tall. International
stars of the surfing scene, like Jack
Johnson and Garret McNamara, have
been spotted riding the waves.
NANTES
A nature retreat in the centre of
Paris, a botanical garden at the
cutting-edge of research, and a
living testimony to history, as well as a
relaxing haven on a summer’s day, the
Jardin des Plantes is one of France’s top
four botanical gardens. It’s home to more
than 10,000 species, and in excess of 5,000
flowers are planted each season. Marvel
at the camellia collection, with its 500
varieties, the 200-year-old magnolia, the
35-metre American tulip tree – tulip-tree
wood was used to build the Machines
de L’ile elephant – and don’t miss the
carnivorous plants.

The original Pizzeria Spontini on
Via Gaspare Spontini has been
serving up plates of delicious,
thick-based pizza with oozing
melted cheese cooked in a wood-
burning oven since 1953. The recipe
has remained unchanged for 30
years and they serve just three types
of pizza: Margherita, Prosciutto and
Mediterranean, as well as lasagna.
Now they have branches across
Milan, and even as far afield as
Tokyo. The perfect fuel for all that
sightseeing.
