NOTTINGHAM’S
ARBORETUM – J. M.
BARRIE (EAST
MIDLANDS)
Let your children – and your
imagination – run wild amongst the
trees at the Arboretum just outside
Nottingham’s city centre. This
location is said to be the inspiration
behind J.M. Barrie’s classic children’s
tale
Peter Pan
. There are over 800
trees to discover, along with a
Victorian circular aviary, Chinese
bell tower, lake and bandstand which
are thought to have had an influence
on Barrie, who worked nearby on
the
Nottingham Journal
from 1883
to 1884. In any case, there are a
good amount of paths that mean
you can wander freely and properly
get away from the busy city.

SOUTH WALES – DYLAN
THOMAS (CARDIFF)
Born and raised in Swansea, Dylan Thomas
is one of Wales’ best known poets and
writers. He spent much of his life in New
Quay and Laugharne – locations that
inspired him greatly in his work. Laugharne
in Carmarthenshire has three famous
attractions – the two-mile Dylan Thomas
Birthday Walk, The Boathouse Museum,
where he lived with his family from 1949 to
1953, and Brown’s Hotel, where he spent
time with his friends, drinking, reading and
writing. Carmarthenshire has a wealth of
historical monuments and natural
attractions to offer – and you’ll be following
in the Welsh author’s footsteps simply by
admiring the scenery of the stunning
coastline here.
