DUBLIN – JAMES JOYCE

Follow in the footsteps of one of the most famous

literary heroes of Ireland, with a James Joyce guided

tour around Dublin. Start with The James Joyce

Centre, housed in a stunning 17th-century Georgian

building and dedicated to promoting understanding of

the life and works of James Joyce. The centre gives

you the opportunity to learn more about the Dublin

that inspired Joyce’s work, and also runs tours around

the city.

Meanwhile, out at Sandycove, the James Joyce

Tower was one of a series of Martello towers built to

withstand an invasion by Napoleon and now holds a

museum devoted to the life and works of James Joyce,

who made the tower the setting for the first chapter of

his masterpiece,

Ulysses

. Other highlights involve

celebrating Bloomsday or ordering a gorgonzola

sandwich and a glass of Burgundy in a pub featured in

Ulysses

, Davy Byrne’s.

CORNWALL – DAPHNE DU MAURIER (NEWQUAY)

Fowey, in Cornwall, and the real Jamaica Inn, on Bodmin Moor, had a big influence on Daphne du Maurier’s

atmospheric writing. Head to the Tourist Information Centre in Fowey as a starting point, as the Du Maurier

Literary Centre is housed here and you can find out more about what inspired her works, which included several

novels and volumes of short stories, five biographies and her own autobiography. The Fowey Festival of Words

and Music, which began as The Du Maurier Festival, showcases the rich literature heritage of the area.
