CUMBRIA – BEATRIX POTTER (NEWCASTLE/LIVERPOOL)

Beatrix Potter is one of the world’s best-loved children’s writers, famous for her anthropomorphic animal characters

such as Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck. Head to the Lake District to find out more about the writer’s life: she

spent many childhood holidays in the area, and moved back in her later life, while many of her stories were inspired

by the places she encountered – Squirrel Nutkin sailed on Derwentwater and

The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse

was

set in Hawkshead. Potter is also credited as being a key figure in saving Herdwick sheep from extinction, having

amassed 14 farms covering 4,000 acres of land by the time she died in 1943, all of which she left to the National

Trust. Visit her 17th-century farmhouse Hill Top in Near Sawrey, embark on the Beatrix Potter trail at Brockhole or

head to The World of Beatrix Potter in Bownes-on-Windermere to rediscover the classic childhood characters.
