PLAINPALAIS MARKET

On Saturday mornings

there’s no better place

to be than the Plaine de

Plainpalais, which hosts one

of Switzerland’s biggest and

best flea markets. From bric-

a-brac to vintage clothes,

second-hand toys to ethnic

jewellery, plus larger pieces

of furniture, you could find

yourself a real one-off at a

In the centre of the Old Town

next to the Town Hall, this

café-restaurant opened in

1808, and was renovated

in 2005. Enjoy a menu that

changes every couple of

weeks and is based on local,

seasonal produce. Eat in

the beautiful stone cellar

in which the restaurant is

located, or on the outdoor

terrace on sunny days.

The set menu of the day is

particularly good value.

THE MONSTER ENERGY

SUPERCROSS GENEVA

From 30th November-

1st December, some of

the world’s finest riders

will perform in a display

incorporating sport, a sound

and light show, and the

thrilling Jump Contest. At

the same time, a motorbike

show will take place, where

the majority of motorbike

manufacturers and suppliers

from the industry will be

represented.

From 7th-9th December,

this festival commemorates

Geneva’s victory against the

Duke of Savoy in 1602 when

his troops met with resistance

from the people of the city.

Some 800 people dressed

in period costume parade

around the Old Town on

foot or on horseback. Keep

warm beside a bonfire

while enjoying a traditional

marmite en chocolate

NEW YEAR’S EVE MAGIC

What began as a small New

Year’s Eve celebration on

Gemüsebrücke bridge in

1988 is now a firm fixture on

the calendar. The festival site

stretches right around the

lake and the highlight is the

impressive firework display.

The brilliant production is

fired off by three ships and

lights up the sky for more

than 15 minutes.

CHEZ MA COUSINE

If you love chicken, then Chez

ma Cousine is for you. They

serve half a free-range, spit-

roast chicken with Provençal

potatoes, dressed salad

and a delicious gravy, for an

extremely reasonable price.

Salads and other variations

also feature on the limited

menu, but it’s essentially all

chicken-based. The original

restaurant in the Old Town has

been joined by cousins in St-

Gervais and Petit-Saconnex.
