GLASGOW
Everyone’s talking about Six by
Nico, the restaurant that changes
theme every six weeks with a new,
six-course tasting menu. The recent
Vietnamese menu commenced with
Vietnam’s beloved Banh Mi sandwich
and concluded with a classic Vietnamese
coffee. The aim was to take guests on
a journey through the alleys of Hanoi to
the vibrant street food markets of Saigon,
providing an authentic experience.
EAST MI DLANDS
The fourth annual Loogabarooga
Festival will take place in
Loughborough from 25th September
to 31st October. The festival has a whole
range of events for families who love
books and illustrated literature, and this
year Loogabarooga is celebrating 80
years of the iconic comic The Beano .
There will be an exhibition of comic art by
John Patrick Reynolds at the Charnwood
Museum, along with the work of local and
nationally-renowned authors, storytellers
and illustrators, plus workashops, readings,
drawing sessions and much more.
ED I NBURGH
Nigella Lawson will be at The
Queen’s Hall on 14th October as she
tours the UK to celebrate the 20th
anniversary of her first book, How to Eat:
The Pleasures and Principles of Good Food
which established her as a household
name. Today, she is a global food icon.
Charming, witty and entertaining, Nigella
will be interviewed by a range of authors,
journalists and foodies during her tour.
EXETER
Southernhay House Hotel is a luxurious
sanctuary in the heart of the city.
The first owner of this Grade-II listed
Georgian townhouse was Captain William
Kirkpatrick, an officer of the East India
Company. The 10 rooms are named after
trades synonymous with Exeter’s past as a
mercantile hub, so expect to stay in Silk,
Cotton, Ivory and Spice among others.
FARO
The Ilha Deserta is a remote sand
bar island south of Faro, which has
some of the most pristine and unspoilt
beaches found in the Algarve. There is
no tourist development on the island,
and along the six-mile shoreline of sand
dunes there is just a single building, an
exclusive restaurant, Estaminé, with fresh
fish and seafood a speciality. Portugal’s
most southerly point, the Cabo de Santa
Maria, is situated on the Ilha Deserta and
is marked by a monument of sea debris
and driftwood. On the lagoon side of the
island there are calm waters ideal
for snorkelling.
GENEVA
Just a short tram ride from the
centre of Geneva is Carouge, a
Mediterranean-style hamlet modelled
after Nice, which has become Geneva’s
hippest suburb. Known as ‘little Italy’, its
houses have painted shutters and red
roofs. Many of the neo-classical houses
and the inner courtyard gardens are well
preserved and have been converted
to boutiques, workshops, ateliers and
antique shops. There are plenty of bistros,
cafés and restaurants, plus art galleries
and studios, too, as well as a museum.
After dark, the area comes alive with jazz
bars and nightclubs.
