Cork City Gaol is in a magnificent
castle-like building, which once
housed 19th-century prisoners.
Wander through the wings of the gaol,
accompanied by the shuffling feet of
inmates and the jingle of the warders’
keys. The cells are furnished with life-like
wax figures, and graffiti on the cell walls
reveals the feelings of some inmates.
The audio-visual show will help you learn
about the social history and contrasting
lifestyles of 19th-century Cork. There’s
also the Radio Museum, an ode to the
Broadcasting Station which was once
located in the Gaol, housing a small
collection of radios and exhibits on
communication.

Treat yourself to a stay in St Joseph’s
boutique hotel. It’s in a beautifully
restored 16th-century stone building
in the pedestrian-only old town. There

floors, beamed ceilings and exposed

and prepare to be entertained Bavarian
style. From traditional folk to ‘Oompop’,
expect foot stomping, table bashing and
hearty singing. Plus there will be plenty of
hot and cold traditional German food.

The 18th-century Garden House Inn
in Durham combines the shabby-
chic style of a country inn with an
elegant conservatory restaurant. The
excellent-value menu includes the likes
of Fishcake with Brown Shrimps & Chive
Cream; Barbequed Salmon with Orange,

and Pork Belly with Smoked Chilli Caramel.

Since it first aired in 2014, Channel 4’s
The Supervet has gained a massive
audience. Now The Supervet himself,
Noel Fitzpatrick, is taking to the stage for
the first time ever with a live show that is
every bit as entertaining as the TV series.
Noel’s big ideas and aptitude for science
have taken him a long way to becoming
pretty much the most famous vet on the
planet. The show, Welcome To My World,
at the 3Arena on 6th October, will reveal
a great deal more about Noel and the
work he does.
DÜSSELDORF
Culture buffs should head to the
Philara Collection for cutting-edge
contemporary art. The gallery is set
in a converted glass factory and features
a range of small and large exhibition
and performance halls, living spaces
for artists and a café, plus a sculpture
terrace on the roof. It includes works by
both established and emerging Düsseldorf
artists, along with top international talents.
The private collection includes more
than 1,000 works and covers painting,
sculpture, installation and photography.
