I NNSBRUCK

Just 20 minutes outside Innsbruck,

the dazzling Swarovski Crystal Worlds

celebrate the iconic crystal. It was

opened in 1995 to mark the centennial

anniversary of the company’s founding

and is one of Austria’s most popular

attractions. Part-museum, part-theme

park and part-art installation, it’s proof

that crystal fascinates both young and

old, from cultures all over the world.

A huge garden was added in 2015,

its centrepiece the Crystal Cloud, a

monumental installation comprising some

800,000 hand-mounted Swarovski crystals

that drift above a black Mirror Pool.

GRON I NGEN

The Groningen Museum is one of

the most beautiful museums in the

Netherlands. It’s certainly the most

high-profile museum, due not only to

its striking design – three main pavilions

designed individually by architects

Philippe Starck, Alessandro Mendini, and

Coop Himmelblau – but also because

of its varying exhibitions, including works

by Russian painter Repin, American

photographer Andres Serrano, and Dutch

photographer Erwin Olaf. The permanent

collection includes a world-renowned

display of Chinese and Japanese

porcelain.

GUERNSEY

Bella Luce is a picturesque Norman

manor house converted into an

elegant boutique hotel in St Martins

with 23 contemporary rooms and suites

designed to complement the character

of the property. The food is a feature

of the hotel, with dishes that celebrate

Guernsey’s position between France and

the British Isles. The pièce de resistance

is the vaulted Cellar Lounge with the

copper stills in which the house gins are

produced.

HAMBURG

On a cobbled street by the water,

Deichgraf is located in a historic

house and serves delicious Hamburg

specialities with a modern twist. The menu

changes with the seasons and much of

the food is sourced from the region. You’ll

find dishes such as Hamburger Pannfisch

(fried fish in a wine-and-mustard sauce),

Saffron Fishsoup, Labskaus (a mix of

salted beef mince, potatoes, onions and

beetroot served with a fried egg, herring

and pickles), Sweet Potato and Coconut

Soup with scallops, and Stuffed Saddle of

Rabbit with Lentil Salad and Wild Garlic,

as well as steaks and hamburgers.

HANNOVER

From May to October after sunset,

the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen

become the Glowing Gardens

as impressive illuminations light up

the fountains, statues and trees,

accompanied by baroque music. The

gardens are among the finest in Europe,

with ornamental box trees, 30,000 summer

flowers, striking white sandstone statues,

the Grand Cascade, which dates from

around 1670, and the Great Fountain,

the tallest garden fountain in Europe at

270 feet. As well as the gardens, there’s

the recently rebuilt Herrenhausen Palace,

home to the new Herrenhausen Palace

Museum.
