One of Europe’s and Scotland’s most important and impressive formal gardens,
Drummond Castle Gardens is a stunning 19th-century restoration of an original
17th-century formal garden which has featured in films including
Rob Roy,
starring Liam Neeson, and, more recently, in the TV adaptation of Diana
Gabaldon’s
Outlander
. Although Drummond has all the characteristics of a
17th-century Scottish Renaissance garden, it was in fact restructured in early
Victorian times and visited by Queen Victoria herself in 1842. The centrepiece
of the gardens is a recently-restored, historically-unique obelisk sundial. It dates
back to 1630 with around 76 separate faces, and was created by John Mylne,
master mason to Charles I. The gardens are open daily until October.
