MALAGA
Half an hour from Málaga, the
Carromato de Max (also called Max’s
Caravan) in Mijas, a tiny museum of
miniatures in a colourful, wooden carriage
is worth visiting. Definitely a must-see, no
tourist can resist going in after reading the
posters at the entrance of the museum
explaining that you can see dressed,
stuffed fleas, a ballet dancer carved on
a toothpick and Leonardo da Vinci’sLast
Supper on a grain of rice. To make it easier
to see the exhibits, many come with a
magnifying glass.
LONDON SOUTHEND
Built in 1891, the imposing Muthu
Westcliff Hotel is positioned high
on the cliffs, close to the seafront,
with spectacular views over the Thames
Estuary. It offers 55 luxurious, individually-
designed bedrooms and romantic suites
that retain their Victorian character,
and a brasserie serving both lunch and
dinner. Treat yourself to a stay in the plush
Estuary suite which has a Jacuzzi bath and
separate lounge area.

American architect Ieoh Ming Pei,
famous for his Louvre Pyramid,
Mudam Luxembourg-Musée d’Art
Moderne Grand-Duc Jean deploys its
magnificent silhouette in the middle
of a sea of green just a few steps
away from the European quarter. The
museum’s remarkable architecture
houses collections and exhibitions of
internationally-renowned, contemporary
art, including works of significant modern
artists including Andy Warhol, Bruce
Nauman, Julian Schnabel, Thomas Struth,
and Daniel Buren.
LYON
The Kitchen Café in Lyon’s university
district is so good it has a Michelin
Bib Gourmand. Run by chef Connie
Zagora and pâtissier Laurent Ozan,
it’s open every day until 6.30pm. For
breakfast, choose from pastries, granola
with fresh fruit and honey, or a cooked
breakfast. Book for lunch and have two
courses for €19, or three for €24. The menu
changes every week, according to the
seasons. In the afternoon it turns into a
dessert bar serving a selection of cookies,
cakes and seasonal fruit tarts. As the only
dessert bar in Lyon, they prepare both
simple desserts and also gourmet dishes.

Watch movies under starry summer
skies with Film4 Summer Screen open-
air film festival at Somerset House from
8th-21st August. The stunning Edmond J
Safra Fountain Court provides the setting
to London’s largest screen, and you can
choose from a mixed programme of UK
premieres, old favourites and Cannes
award-winning films. Before the movies
start, enjoy DJ sets inspired by the films.
There are food and drink options, or take
a picnic.

Every year, Buckingham Palace’s
summer opening features special
exhibitions. This year marks 200
years since Queen Victoria’s birth and
a special exhibition will tell the story
of how the young queen transformed
Buckingham Palace from a private house
into a working royal residence. It is also the
50th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s
death, and the palace’s A Life in Drawing
exhibition will bring together more than
200 of the Renaissance master’s greatest
drawings in the Royal Collection, forming
the largest exhibition of Leonardo’s work in
over 65 years.
