MALAGA

Half an hour from Málaga, the

Carromato de Max, a tiny museum

of miniatures in a colourful, wooden

carriage is worth visiting. Definitely a

must-see, no tourist can resist going in

after reading the posters at the entrance

of the museum explaining that you can

see dressed, stuffed fleas, a ballet dancer

carved on a toothpick, a naval battle on

a pinhead and Leonardo da Vinci’s

Last

Supper

on a grain of rice. To make it easier

to see the exhibits, many come with a

magnifying glass.

LONDON SOUTHEND

Built in 1891, the imposing Muthu

Westcliff Hotel is positioned high

on the cliffs, close to the seafront,

with spectacular views over the Thames

Estuary. It offers 55 luxurious, individually-

designed bedrooms and romantic suites

that retain their Victorian character, and a

brasserie serving both lunch and dinner.

American architect Ieoh Ming Pei,

famous for his Louvre Pyramid,

Mudam Luxembourg-Musée d’Art

Moderne Grand-Duc Jean deploys its

magnificent silhouette in the middle

of a sea of green just a few steps

away from the European quarter. The

museum’s remarkable architecture

internationally-renowned, contemporary

art, including works of significant modern

MANCHESTER

While away a fun few hours at Manchester’s Museum of Science & Industry, where seven

permanent galleries have plenty to entertain. In the Experiment! gallery, there are 25

hands-on exhibits and even a soft-play area – stare into the mirror of infinity, create a

tornado and watch your own skeleton ride a bicycle. For transport lovers, there’s the Air &

Space Hall, where you can see the first Ford Model T (built in Manchester), and wartime Avro

aeroplanes, as well as steam engines in the Power Hall. You can also travel into space with

Tim Peake in a Virtual Reality Soyuz capsule (£6 charge applies, book during school holidays) or

see what it’s like to fly your own jet on the Fly 360 flight simulator (£10 for two). A highlight is the

chance to see the legendary locomotive Stephenson’s Rocket in a temporary exhibition.

There are also daily shows to inform and entertain, including how a mill engine works and

its role in the Industrial Revolution, and a replica of the first computer to store and run a

program, as well as temporary exhibitions.
