The Eden Project’s popular
Rainforest Biome is home to
a stunning orchid wall and
orchid pergola – a living display
of hundreds of orchid plants
and 52 different species –
celebrating these fascinating
flowers. The spectacular display,
which was planted with the
help of students at Writhlington
School, will pave the way for
an even bigger celebration of
these tiny hero plants by way
of an Orchid Festival, which
is hoped will take place at
the Eden Project in 2020.
Writhlington School is
home to the Orchid Project,
which sees students grow
rare orchids from seed and
take part in work experience
with the Eden Project each
year. Funds raised from
selling these rare, and often
endangered plants, helps
fund the student expeditions
around the world in which they
propagate the species with
the help of local children.

Orchids on display
David Attenborough, Caitlin Moran and
Kate Atkinson are topping the bill at The
Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham
Literature Festival from 5th-14th October.
Cheltenham’s Montpellier Gardens
will be transformed into a vibrant Festival
Village, with tens of thousands of book-
lovers descending for 10 days of literary
celebration at what is the oldest literature
festival in the UK.
Over 1,000 of the best writers, thinkers
and performers will appear in a diverse
programme covering fiction, food, history,
poetry, current affairs, art, sport, faith,
fashion, lifestyle, psychology, science and

entertaining toddlers to teens.
Kate Atkinson, one of the country’s best-
loved novelists, will introduce her highly-
anticipated new novelTranscriptions, Rose
Tremain will share her lauded memoir Rosie,
and Gail Honeyman will celebrate the
extraordinary success of Eleanor Oliphant
is Completely Fine. Graham Norton will
demonstrate his understanding of the
darker side of flawed human nature as
he discusses his new novel, A Keeper, and
in this final festival before Britain leaves
the EU, guest curator Sebastian Faulks will
lead a panel examining the pleasures and
challenges of reading beyond our borders.
Living legend David Attenborough joins
Emma Freud to discuss his new edition of
the ground-breakingLife on Earth, and
former ballerina and BBC Strictly Come
Dancing judge Darcey Bussell will reflect
on her life, career and new book, Darcey
Bussell: Evolved. Double Oscar-winning
actress Sally Field, star ofLincoln,Forrest
Gump and Mrs Doubtfire, looks at
highlights from her film career, and Eric
Idle, founding member of Monty Python,
shares the meaning of his own life.

a mean jazz piano, in addition
to starring inJurassic Park,

Fly. His band, The Mildred
Snitzer Orchestra (named
after a relative of his)
play loose, improvised
versions of jazz standards

Starlight, which they’ve just
recorded for Decca.
They’re pretty relaxed on
stage, and Jeff makes sure his
musicians and the audience
have a good time together.
