SEPTEMBER 2018

Take-off

Experiencing the Landscape: Art on the

East Devon Way

 is a celebration of 25

years of the 40-mile footpath running from

Exmouth to Lyme Regis. It’s the culmination

of a year-long collaborative project

between the Thelma Hulbert Gallery

in Honiton and the East Devon Area of

Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership.

The aim of the project has been to use

diverse art forms and artists to enable

people of all ages to engage with the

natural landscape in new ways.

This exhibition, which runs from 8th

September -27th October at the Thelma

Hulbert Gallery, showcases new work

created especially for this project

by local contemporary artists Angus

Rutherford, Gabby Hoad and Jenny

Mellings. Exhibited alongside will be a

reflection of the 80 nature-based creative

workshops undertaken with schools and

the public over the summer. They include

printmaking, creative writing, cyanotypes,

pin-hole cameras, tactile painting and

much more.

Angus Rutherford led investigative

drawing workshops in the landscape and

said, “It was enormously satisfying to work

with the students and equally satisfying to

‘learn’ the methods anew through their

varied and wonderful responses. The motto

for this project might have been ‘as long as

you observe hard, whatever comes from

your fingers will have an integrity’.”

Jenny Mellings, who explored pre-

photography methods of capturing the

landscape said, “In celebration of the 25

years since this walk was created (or more

likely re-established), I undertook to make

25 paintings with mainly local pigments,

and sometimes found foliage for tools.

There are also photographic records of my

walks that form a separate body of work.”

The exhibition is open from Tuesday to

Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and admission

is free.

The historic Highland village

of Carrbridge is the place

to be on the 6th October

as the 25th annual Golden

Spurtle World Porridge Making

Championships take place. The

competition attracts porridge-

makers from across the world

with professional and amateur

chefs, food producers, food

bloggers, small business owners

and home cooks vying for the

Golden Spurtle trophy and

the coveted title of ‘World

Porridge Making Champion’.

The spurtle is a wooden Scottish

kitchen tool, dating from the

15th century, that’s used to stir

porridge, soups and stews.

The cook-off begins with a

pipe band parade. The main

event takes place in the village

hall with competitors battling

it out,

Bake Off

-style, to create

their very best porridge using

oatmeal, water and salt. There’s

also a speciality category for

oatmeal combined with any

other ingredients to celebrate

the versatility of oats.

Once the cooking has

finished, guests will have the

chance to sample the entries

and enjoy whisky tasting, a

food market and the chance to

buy a hand-turned Spurtle.
