Bee in the City is a free public art
trail that will see over 100 giant
honey-bee sculptures winging
their way to Manchester this July
through to September for the city’s
biggest and most spectacular-
ever art event. The Bee in the
City sculpture trail is inspired by
Manchester’s celebrated worker
bee emblem which has been
part of the city’s heraldry for over
150 years and is synonymous
with Manchester’s pioneering
and creatively industrious spirit
pollinating progress and renewal.
From the Stone Roses to the
cobbles of Coronation Street,
over 100 giant sculptures will pay

homage to some of the most
iconic elements of Manchester
in one of the biggest public art
events the city has ever seen.
Sponsors of the Bee in the City
trail took part in a special art
selection event in April, where
they chose their favourite Bee
from around 180 designs.
The bees will be placed at
key locations throughout the
city for nine weeks from 23rd
July to 23rd September, giving
both Mancunians and visitors
the chance to enjoy them whilst
taking in the city’s landmarks,
cultural gems and areas they
may not have explored before.

A gourmet’s paradise
Free from cars and artificial light pollution, the
island of Sark is beautiful, wild and natural.
Head across the La Coupée to La Sablonnerie
Hotel on Little Sark and you’ll find a unique
combination of food, wine and atmosphere.
Owner and manager of La Sablonnerie,
Elizabeth Perrée, describes her hotel as a ‘joie
de vivre’ and nowhere is it more apparent
than in the joy of food at the hotel.
La Sablonnerie prides itself on using locally-
sourced produce – from fresh lobsters and
scallops to the fresh berries that are grown on
the island during the summer season and the
gorse honey produced by Sark bees.
Enjoy a lobster lunch in the beautiful
gardens in the summer or an afternoon
cream tea in the sunshine. In the evening,
enjoy candlelit fine dining in the restaurant
which will help explain why La Sablonnerie
was given the
Condé Nast
Johansens accolade
of ‘most romantic
hotel’ as well as
‘small hotel of the
year.’
Elizabeth says,
“We were very proud
to receive those
awards, along with
recognition from
Which? hotel guide as ‘the place to stay in
the Channel Islands.’ Of the Seven Bailiwick
restaurants included in the 2018 Michelin
Guide, the only restaurant of the group to be
noted as one of the guide’s ‘best addresses’
was La Sablonnerie Hotel.”

Each super-sized, 3-D bee
sculpture will be decorated with
its own unique design, created by
regional professional, emerging
and amateur artists – to make an
unforgettable spectacle when
the trail goes live. There will be an
app and a map that people can
use to follow the trail and find the
bees so it will be a very interactive
and unique event.
After the trail, the bees will
be auctioned to raise funds for
The Lord Mayor of Manchester’s
charity, We Love MCR to improve
the lives and life chances of
Manchester people.
