PERP I GNAN

With its central location on a narrow

lane in a pedestrianised area on the

edge of the old quarter, close to the

shops and restaurants on Quai Sébastien

Vauban, the friendly two-star Hotel de la

Loge makes the perfect base for a break

in Perpignan. It’s small with clean rooms

in either traditional or modern decor and

friendly service – and it’s competitively

priced, too. A wrought-iron staircase

leads from the reception area to the 22

rooms over two floors. There’s a small

bar-restaurant and a patio and garden

to relax in, and continental breakfast is

served in the mornings.

PAR I S

The stunning gardens at the Palace of Versailles need to be replanted around once

every 100 years to be maintained. Louis XVI did so at the beginning of his reign, as did

Napoleon III. Following damage caused by a series of storms in the late 20th century,

the garden has been fully replanted and is now similar to how it would have looked to Louis

XIV. Part of the appeal of the gardens is the fountains. Every summer more than 30 of the

garden’s 55 historic fountains with their 620 water jets are set to atmospheric music, and the

spectacle is particularly captivating at night. When night falls, the gardens are transformed to

offer an unforgettable visual and musical treat as the fountains and groves come alive with

colourful and dramatic lighting effects. There will be water features in the Mirror Fountain,

lasers streaking across the dark in the Colonnade Grove and a fireworks display in front of

the Grand Canal by the Groupe F to conclude the evening’s entertainment. Performances

take place every Saturday evening from 8.30pm to 10.40pm, with fireworks from 10.50pm to

11.05pm until 15th September. You can also enjoy daytime performances at weekends until

28th October. For details of performance times and tickets, visit
