MANCHESTER

Taking place from 24th-27th August, the Manchester Pride Big Weekend incorporates The

Big Weekend at Manchester’s world-famous Gay Village, the Manchester Pride Parade

on the streets of the city centre on 25th August, and the Candlelit Vigil in Sackville Park on

27th August.

Rita Ora, Jake Shears, Sigala, Alexandra Burke and Louise will top the Big Weekend bill on

the Thomas Cook Airlines Stage this year, while the Gaydio Dance Arena will welcome TCTS,

Ana Matronic, Jon Pleased Wimmin and Pete Tong along with some familiar faces including

DJ Paulette, Jamie Bull, Kriss Herbert and Danny Howard. The Arena will also see two of the

original DJs from iconic New York club Studio 54, Nicky Siano and Jellybean Benitez, recreate

‘A night at Studio 54’, while the Sackville Stage will play host to Proms in the Park, Heather

Peace Presents and Bongo’s Bingo.

New to Pride is the Superbia Weekend, a free event celebrating LGBT+ life with debate,

film, comedy, literature, music, sport, theatre and more.

Head to the Impark Summer Festival,

which takes place in the Olympic Park

until 19th August. There are traditional

fairground rides such as a big wheel and

dodgems. You can also try your hand at

watersports including wake boarding,

paddleboarding and even volleyball on

an inflatable volleyball field on the lake!

There are plenty of food stalls and shops

selling handmade items and the famous

Ahoi beach bar, where you can enjoy

both a cocktail and sand under your feet.

Every night from 7pm there are free music

performances, featuring rock, soul, drum

‘n’ bass and folk artists – 60 concerts in all

– and on 2nd and 16th August there are

fireworks.

NANTES

A nature retreat in the centre of

Paris, a botanical garden at the

cutting edge of research, and a living

testimony to history, as well as a relaxing

haven on a summer’s day, the Jardin

des Plantes is one of France’s top four

botanical gardens. It’s home to more than

10,000 species, and in excess of 5,000

flowers are planted each season. Marvel

at the camellia collection, with its 500

varieties, the 200-year-old magnolia, the

35-metre American tulip tree – tulip-tree

wood was used to build the Machines

de L’ile elephant – and don’t miss the

carnivorous plants.

The original Pizzeria Spontini on Via

Gaspare Spontini has been serving

up plates of delicious, thick-based

pizza with oozing melted cheese cooked

in a wood-burning oven since 1953. The

recipe has remained unchanged for

30 years and they serve just three types

of pizza: Margherita, Prosciutto and

Mediterranean, as well as lasagna. Now

they have branches across Milan, and

even as far afield as Tokyo. The perfect

fuel for all that sightseeing.

Part of The Great Exhibition of

the North, a free, summer-long

celebration of the North of England’s

pioneering spirit, is Brick This, Lego®

Architects – A 3D Innovation Timeline

of the North, which shows what the

region has done for the world through

the medium of Lego. Taking place at

the Mining Institute until 9th September,

it features 40 intricate models built with

50,000 bricks.
