ABERDEEN
Take a fascinating tour of the Balmoral Estate, the Royal family’s Scottish holiday home,
in the company of a guide. The three-hour Balmoral Luxury Land Rover Safari takes you
through the manicured parkland and gardens in front of Balmoral Castle. You then
travel through the Estate farm to enter the old Caledonian Pine Forest. This is one of the
country’s most important habitats and home to the elusive capercaillie, the largest member
of the grouse family. After spending some time exploring this pristine area, you head out
of the woods onto the open hillside. The views soon start to open up as you travel through
the heather high up the flanks of Lochnagar, one of Scotland’s most famous mountains.
The safari then heads back to civilisation via the monuments and historical buildings of
Easter Balmoral. Discover the intriguing life stories of the resident wildlife and learn about the
conservation management that is currently underway to help protect some of the UK’s rarest
species. Although there are no guarantees, some of the wildlife species which are regularly
encountered include birds of prey, red squirrels, red deer, red grouse, black grouse, snow
bunting and salmon.
ANGLESEY
Located in the heart of Menai Bridge
within a historical butcher’s shop (still
with an original slate wall), Stephen
and Bethan Stevans’ rustic restaurant
Sosban & the Old Butcher’s is a dining
experience with a difference. Open from
Thursday to Saturday evenings, they
create dishes using the best, locally-
sourced produce available on the day.
There’s no menu – the eight to 12 courses
are a ‘grouping of ingredients’ – and
while dishes sound simple, the result is pure
theatre, as befits the chef who worked for
maestro Marcus Wareing.
AL I CANTE
Support local animal charity APASA
at the monthly flea market in Javea’s
Pinosol Park. Held on the first Saturday
of each month, there are plenty of stalls
selling bargains, plus food and drink.
APASA was founded in 1999 by a group
of various nationalities – Spanish, English,
German and Swiss – with the aim of
rescuing dogs that are abandoned,
ill-treated or lost. APASA’s aim is to find
every dog an appropriate new home
– they have around 300 residents in the
shelter, with dogs for adoption on their
website.
ANTWERP
Once home to the world’s first
industrial printing works, and the
original residence and workshop
of the Plantin and Moretus publishing
dynasty, Museum Plantin-Moretus is set
in a beautiful medieval building with a
courtyard garden. The museum has the
world’s oldest printing press, priceless
manuscripts and original type sets along
with a library that dates back to 1640,
a bookshop dating to 1700 and rooms
lined with gilt leather. Young and old will
enjoy the guided tours, exhibitions and
workshops here.
AMSTERDAM
The magnificent Grachtenfestival
(Canal Festival), from 9th-18th August
on and around Amsterdam’s canals,
is one of the cultural highlights of the
Amsterdam summer. The city’s historic
canal belt, a UNESCO World Heritage site,
hosts the 10-day festival of classical music
at numerous beautiful locations. One of
the highlights during the Grachtenfestival
is the Prinsengracht Concert, taking place
on the pontoon by the Pulitzer Hotel and
drawing in huge crowds each year. The
concert is free and broadcast live on
Dutch TV.
