Jazz fans should head to the
Birmingham, Solihull and Sandwell Jazz
Festival from 20th-29th July which will
once again bring top-drawer players from
across the world to Birmingham for a series of
mostly free gigs taking place at restaurants,
bars, public spaces and museums. The
festival boasts a truly international flavour,
with acts from Lithuania, the USA, Canada,
Argentina, France, Germany, Spain, the
Netherlands and Belgium joining an array of
home-grown musicians.

Oceanopolis, the ocean discovery
park, is so much more than just an
aquarium. This enormous ‘aquatic
world’ is divided into three pavilions. The
Polar Pavilion takes you to the Arctic to
discover Europe’s largest penguin colony;
the Tropical Pavilion is all warm seas and
numerous species of colourful fish; and the
Brittany Pavilion looks at the biodiversity of
the region’s shoreline. Highlights are the
shark tanks, where a number of different
species can be seen; a 13m-long wall
of 60 different live corals; the recreated
mangrove, which stretches across
mudflats; and the seal and penguin
displays.

If you love fish, look no further than
Restaurant Chez Albert on the
dockside of the Port des Pêcheurs.
Right by the beach, it has the freshest fish
and seafood, sourced from the St Jean
de Luz fish market. You can enjoy it in the
dining room overlooking the sea or on the
sunny terrace. The menu includes Grilled
Lobster, Shellfish and Paella, plus Grilled
Sardines with Melted Butter and Piquillo
Peppers stuffed with Biscay Cod with
Squid Ink Sauce. Their traditional seafood
platter is a feast of fresh oysters, lobster,
crab, winkles, cockles, langoustines and
other delights.

The 40th Bristol International Balloon
Fiesta will take place from 9th-12th
August offering four fantastic days of
free family fun. It’s Europe’s largest annual
meeting of hot-air balloons, attracting
over 130 balloons from across the globe,
and includes mass ascents and glowing
night-time flights. Held at Ashton Court
Estate, alongside the fantastic sight of
hot-air balloons filling the skies, visitors
can also expect a large number of
stands, fairground rides, food, drink and
entertainment, along with spectacular
firework displays.
BORDEAUX
Set in the heart of Bordeaux, in
Place Saint-Christoly, Mama Shelter
is an elegant yet quirky hotel in the
historic Gas Tower building that was
Bordeaux’s first experiment in architectural
Modernism. The hotel’s stylish rooms – they
come in Small, Medium, Large, XL and
XXL Family – are designed by Philippe
Starck and feature lively patterns, cartoon
masks, painted calligraphy on the walls
and ceilings, illuminated headboards and
wall-mounted Mac computer/TVs. There’s
free WiFi, a sixth-floor restaurant and a
rooftop bar where you enjoy panoramic
views with your drinks and dinner.
