What to see

OUT AND ABOUT AROUND

THE CITY

10. RHEINTURM

You can’t visit Düsseldorf

and not go to the top of

the Rheinturm, the city’s

icon. This 240.5-metre-high

telecommunication tower

offers fabulous views from its

observation deck at 168 metres,

and you can enjoy a meal in its

slowly-revolving restaurant at

172.5 metres.

11. NORDPARK

This is one of the most

popular parks in the city,

and it’s easy to see why. It’s

a beautiful expanse of wide

walkways, old trees, meadows,

fountains, sculptures, colourful

flowerbeds, an aquazoo and

a Japanese Garden. The park

also contains themed gardens

like the lily garden, which has

a pond surrounded by pillars

that provide welcome shade

in summer.

WHERE TO ENJOY A DRINK

AROUND DUSSELDORF

7. BRAUEREI FERDINAND

SCHUMACHER

If you like your beer,

independent Schumacher Alt is

the oldest brewery in production

in Düsseldorf. The beer is a deep,

rich amber, with flavours of citrus

and malt. Accompany it with

some typical German dishes as

the menu is typically German,

with meat products specially

prepared, such as goulash and

pike-perch.

8. SQUARE BAR

Vintage decor and the latest

mixology techniques have

combined to make the Square

the bar to have a drink in

the city, with its dark wood,

rich blue walls, an impressive

mirror behind the wooden

bar, and classic bar stools. The

exotic cocktail menu, though,

is anything but vintage and

is constantly changing, with

ingredients from around the

world. The Clash, for instance,

is made from Ceylon orange

tea-infused bourbon, Buddha’s

Hand cordial, Italian aperitif,

and French liqueur.

9. DOX BAR

Dox bar in the Hyatt Hotel at

Media Harbour has spectacular

views of the city’s skyline.

Classic cocktails are given a

modern twist, and there’s an

excellent choice of wines and

spirits. They also hold a number

of gin-tasting classes.

12. SCHLOSS BENRATH

This beautiful, 18th-century

Baroque pleasure palace was

built as a summer residence and

hunting lodge for the Elector

Carl Theodor. It sits at the heart

of 148 acres of stunning gardens

dotted with lakes, woodland,

sculptures and avenues of

lime trees. The palace is now a

museum that offers public tours.
