“We’ve got

ways to warm

you up, from

cosy pubs with

roaring fires to

snug camping

pods and

blissful spas”

W

elcome to the January issue of

Flight Time

– and a happy new

year to you all! Who knows what 2018 will bring? That’s the fun

part, though, not knowing what lies ahead.

My New Year’s resolutions are all boringly predictable – the

usual eat less, spend less, exercise more. I’ve also added two more cities to my

travel wish list for the year: Flybe destinations Venice and Rodez. I’ve always

wanted to go to Venice but somehow never made it. Oh, I did, three years ago

after my son had an accident on holiday in Turkey and we touched down in

Venice in the air ambulance to refuel on our way back to the UK. I don’t think

that counts, although I did get some pretty spectacular aerial views as we

came in to land. Our feature on page 42 maps out the perfect way to spend the

ultimate short break in Venice, from staying at the legendary Cipriani to dinner at

Michelin-starred Venissa.

Rodez is an undiscovered gem, the capital of the Aveyron department of

France, at the foot of the Massif Central and less than a two-hour drive from

the Mediterranean. The Old Town has historic townhouses and mansions and

beautiful buildings like the chapel of the old Jesuit College, and you’ll find plenty of

restaurants, cafés and markets. Turn to page 59 for a taste of what Rodez has to offer.

While Venice and Rodez enjoy winter sun, January is often one of our coldest

months. So on page 26, we’ve got ways to warm you up, from cosy pubs with

roaring fires to snug camping pods and blissful spas.

In this issue, we also meet

Britain’s Got Talent

and Amanda Holden’s golden

buzzer act, comedian Daliso Chaponda, who talks about his debut stand-up tour

and his love for Manchester. We take the Settle to Carlisle railway, England’s

‘greatest historic scenic route’ and visit the valleys of South Wales – the Land

of Legends.

All this, and more.
