L’e spr i t França i s –

Count e r cul tur e s , 1969-1989

Opening on 24th

February at

La Maison Rouge

in Paris' 12th

arondissement, this

exhibition presents a

collection of varied

works that reflect the

mood of France in

the 1970s and 1980s.

Following the civil

unrest in the tricolore

nation during May

1968, which almost

brought the country’s

entire economy

to a halt, an anti-establishment counterculture movement was

born, with popular culture influencing traditional productions

of literature, philosophy and the visual arts as never before. This

new, countercultural ‘French spirit’ blended idealism and nihilism,

caustic humour and eroticism, darkness and hedonism – all

represented in this exhibition curated by art critics Guillaume

Désanges and François Piron.
